thoughts.
there is a deluge of comments on fb on how people miss george yeo and how some think that it's foolhardy to vote in the opposition in aljunied GRC just for the sake of opposition voice in parliament. some go further to say it's myopic to vote in the opposition for the sake of doing so.
but get this clear: are we voting in WP in aljunied simply for the sake of opposition?
these arguments will never end. i obviously disagree with them because it's even more myopic to vote the ruling party in because of 1 x george yeo.
if you were to compare man-for-man, the WP has equivalent if not better candidates. the only reason why it does not seem so is because of the ruling party's track record. and it's always difficult to compare track records because WP were never given a chance at all.
so i say it's ALL GERD. ALJUNIED HAS WOKEN UP.
i salute the bravery and courage of aljunied residents. the 54.71% of course. this is a pretty strong mandate and despite the loss of a foreign minister, i say the MIW had it coming. george yeo fans can shout unfairness if they like, but they cannot change the fact that he is out.
regrettably, the rest of singapore is not nearly as courageous as the voters in hougang or aljunied. so george yeo was a talent, more so than most ministers, right?
then what the heck is going on with the other GRCs? joo chiat?
it is not enough to cut margins, because ultimately the majority wins and the ruling party goes home with 81/87 seats despite getting only 60% of the vote. mathematically that does not look very correct.
anyway to hell with all the elections. it probably will not change my life a lot, and being the 'suck thumb' sort i will live with consequences that fellow singaporeans have made. it's just as george yeo lives with consequences that his party has made.
it's too bad. personally i liked the guy more than any other minister. i thought desmond choo was good too. and i would say that for sitoh's efforts all these 10 years, he definitely deserved this win.
and some who should have been punished for their errors and poor attitudes walk into parliament again because of the cowardice of the general population. shame on you fools. get some backbone.
i know i'm more for romanticism than for pragmatism. but i try to find a balance. and it must be noted that voting out incompetent people falls under the category of 'pragmatism'. you do not want the same old people to be making the same old mistakes.
it's the end of the story anyway, at least for five years. there isn't much point debating it over and over again as this can only potentially sour relations with friends (especially those who cannot see beyond their feelings). moreover, singapore has already voted.
moving on, i still haven't decided on what to do with my holidays and that is giving me a major headache. can chelsea please beat manchester united tonight as well? the world has too much iniquity and a chelsea win would about set the balance right, at least for a while.
final thought of the day, which i actually have been thinking about this whole election.
the ruling party is like manchester united: winning despite not playing well.
